FDM Printing
The most popular form of consumer-level 3D printing, Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is a type of additive manufacturing which utilizes molten thermoplastic filament extruded layer-by-layer to create models from the ground up. FDM 3D printing is well-suited for functional parts, with a variety of common filaments used to suit a number of applications.
SLA Printing
An older method of 3D printing than FDM, stereolithography (SLA) printers create parts through the selective curing of liquid photopolymer resin. While parts produced in this method are typically smaller and less suited to functional applications than FDM, the level of detail they are able to produce is far superior. For a sense of scale, the thickness of the average human hair is roughly 75µm — SLA printers are able to achieve a resolution as fine as 10µm. As such, SLA printing is well-suited to the production of artistic models, tabletop miniatures, or proof of concept parts requiring an element of aestheticism and fine detail.
CAD Modelling
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is an indispensable tool for engineering and design. CAD modelling is used for the designing of any parts whose dimensions are important — interlocking parts, functional tools, or replacement components, for example.
Mesh Modelling
Mesh modelling is a fundamental tool commonly used for creating angular inorganic objects and game assets, and for the modification and optimization of 3D scans and other preexisting files. It is often used in conjunction with other modelling techniques, and deals with the manipulation of models represented by thousands to millions of polygonal faces. If you are looking to repair a 3D scan for printing, edit an existing 3d model, or incorporate an image, dataset, or other filetype into a model, mesh modelling will likely be what you need.
Digital Sculpting
Digital sculpting is a technique commonly used by artists and graphic designers for the creation of aesthetic and organic models. Where CAD modelling requires all drawings and shapes to be thoroughly dimensioned, digital sculpting allows for more abstract and free-form modelling. If you are looking to obtain a custom 3D model of a person, character, animal, landscape, or other organic model, digital sculpting will likely be what you require.
Printer Repair
3D printers are complicated machines, and their ability to successfully produce aesthetic and dimensionally accurate parts is dependent upon the synchronous interaction of dozens of components. FDM printers in particular are known for being quite temperamental, and it is not uncommon to see a printer experience a sharp decrease in print quality (if not complete failure) after months of flawless operation. Troubleshooting these issues when they arise can be quite tiresome, and many users will spend excessive money and time replacing arbitrary components in hopes of fixing the problem. By bringing your machine to an experienced technician for troubleshooting and repair, you can avoid this stress and downtime, and have confidence that your machine will return ready to perform at the top of its game.
