PC Build

I designed this computer based on extended research, with the help of pcpartpicker.com. The design was created with the goal of having a more efficient and practical machine for 3D modelling and rendering, as prior to the build I had been doing the entirety of my work on a laptop. The build was sponsored by Replik8 Studios, and while performance was the foremost priority, I also aimed to minimize overall cost, finding sales, discounts, and competitive prices for all necessary parts. Due to the scarcity of graphics cards at the time of this build, I utilized a Zotac GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, the best card I was able to obtain without paying inflated prices. The parts list is as follows:

Computer

  • Motherboard: ASUS Tuf Gaming X570-Plus (Wifi)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X

  • GPU: Zotac GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (Later upgraded to EVGA RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra)

  • Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Later upgraded to Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer Ill 240 A-RGB Black AIO)

Benchmarking

In order to gauge performance gains, benchmark testing was performed on both my Gigabyte Aorus 5 laptop and the finished PC build using Blender Open Data. Moving from my laptop to the PC, the improvements were impressive and quite substantial, as can be seen below:

Total CPU render time was reduced from 1:32:44 to 24:15, while total GPU render time was reduced from 34:11 to 7:23. These constitute speed increases of 73.8% and 78.4%, respectively—the PC renders taking roughly a quarter to a fifth of the laptop’s render times. When some complex animations can take dozens of hours to render, a performance improvement of this magnitude can reduce the time of a single render by days. The boost to productivity this presents is very exciting, and I am eager to begin creating 3D models and scenes using this new machine.
